Bordering some of the most remote and scenic sections of the Lower Pecos River, Continental Ranch is a perfect spot for paddling, swimming or snorkeling. The 17 miles of river running along our ranch is above the flat waters of Lake Amistad. This is the last of where the river flows free, with beautiful clear green water. The current is largely mild, with a few intermittent easy rapids. At Painted Canyon, the crux of the river creates Class III and IV rapids for the more advanced boatman. There are several possibilities for creating shuttle trips of various lengths down the river. However, most put-in/take-outs do require a short hike to vehicle parking. If you're carrying heavy equipment, the hike can be strenuous. Access points involve short hikes from the canyon rim down to the river. Kayakers and tubers who are trying to shuttle will have an easier time. For swimming and snorkeling, be sure to check out the Emerald Pool, a spectacular swimming hole located near the campground at Shumla Bend. This is a 30-foot-deep chasm of clear water walled in by convoluted rock stretching for over a quarter mile. Here, you can easily see schools of large fish from above the water. |
