Spring and Fall are the best times of year to visit, but since this is Texas, winter weather can be mild at times. Some parts of Summer can be tolerable if you stay in the shade or swim. Because of deer hunting, the ranch is closed to recreation for November and December.

Spring is a great season to witness the flora and fauna of this fascinating ecosystem. The Pecos River is a major flyway for migrating birds, and springtime provides great opportunities to see a number of species passing through the region. At the same time, flowering cacti are in abundance. Of special note are the multitudes of brilliant crimson ocotillo blossoms that appear in early spring.

The crisp, clear skies and mild temperatures during the fall make it an excellent time to explore the Continental Ranch. October is especially good if you're concerned about encountering warm weather. But don’t discount the warmer weather -- there are magnificent swimming holes scattered along the length of the river. Especially inviting is a 30-foot-deep pool of water that gives Emerald Pools its name.
