The Lower Pecos region contains a spectacular collection of prehistoric rock art. This includes a unique display of petroglyphs (rock carvings) -- one of the most remarkable in the United States, let alone Texas. "The Map," as it has become known, is a single collection of hundreds of fascinating petroglyphs covering more than an acre of slick rock on the ground. Visitors to the ranch will get a glimpse of an archeological site that has fascinated the country's foremost researchers for years.

We offer an all-day outing to see the tremendous rock art displays and some of the history on the fourth-generation Continental Ranch. The tour allows visitors to see the 90-year-old ranch headquarters, domestic livestock, native desert plants, prehistoric rock formations, and a scenic, undeveloped area of the Pecos River.

The tour also includes plenty of opportunities to see birds and wildlife in their natural habitats. Our journey will end at a remote location on the Pecos River, where each person will walk in the footsteps of ancient man as we stop to examine petroglyphs created over 4,000 years ago. The petroglyphs have been a focal point of research by the San Antonio Witte Museum and the Texas Rock Art Foundation. The area has also been photographed and examined by National Geographic and The Smithsonian. The tour includes snacks, cold drinks, and a picnic lunch on the cliffs above the serene Pecos River. By far, this is the most amazing site of rock art you’re bound to ever see!

Rock Art viewing is by reserved tours only. Please call for reservations, since the tour is not scheduled on a regular basis. Telephone: (830) 775-6957 or (432) 292-4412.

Cost is $35 per person, with a 4 person minimum. No personal checks, cash only.

PLEASE — no digging or collecting of artifacts allowed anywhere on the ranch.
